ENGL 440, Studies in Shakespeare / “Green Shakespeare” (Anglin): “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” What constituted an ecosystem to Shakespeare and his audience? What was the perceived relationship between humans, animals and the environment? How might built environments and urban ecosystems have altered notions of selfhood? How are natural spaces represented in a given text? This course focuses on Shakespearean representations and early modern conceptions of nature and the environment. Students will read a number of plays, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear, Macbeth, As You Like It, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. We will examine the extent to which early moderns might have understood and responded to ecological matters, such as enclosures, deforestation, natural disasters, human relationships with animals, and climate change.
