Western Newfoundland’s balsam fir forests have been managed for many years. I have been told that balsam fir trees start to “fall apart” before they turn 100, perhaps before they turn 60, which is to say that their growth slows, they become susceptible to insect infestation, and they start to fall over onto each other. This falling apart, however, produces the deranged architecture of old growth: it is not composed of nice lines of trees, but of jumbles of trees, some tall and topped with mighty crowns, but many rotting, filling with fungus and crawling with insects just under the bark, falling over to slowly sink back into the earth, forming holes in the canopy for the next cohort..
