How do we change our carbon footprint and reduce reliance on oil? Let’s push for changes from the source the manufacturers of plastics. We can reduce our volumes with less use, but the real solution comes from truly biodegradable options. With plastics already successfully banned in large cities around the world San Francisco, and Paris (and soon all of France) could the Boundary be next??.
Money for the $103 million project is coming from a deferal account created by the Canadian Radio television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), an independent public organization that regulates and supervises Canadian broadcasting and telecommunications systems, in 2002. If I were on Council, one of the first thing I would suggest is a process for public engagement before major policy direction or major capital projects are formulated.Municipal government is the closest form of representative government to the people and public input is crucial to an inclusive and visionary community.I see very little of this happening in Leduc. There was recently an open house on the intermunicipal development plan but only after the process was completed, there was no public forum for input to the City’s Strategic Plan, at least that I could find. In fact, the last public visioning session was almost 2 years ago.City Council is the direct representative body for the citizens of Leduc and, although we elect them to make crucial policy decisions on our behalf, they also have an obligation to regularly consult with the citizens to gain an “on the street” perspective. But, and a big but, the citizens of Leduc need to show an interest in their local governance and not only attend public forums when called but also attend Council meetings and witness democracy in action.Currently, Council meetings and public hearings are generally poorly attended by the public (I missed the Bylaw meeting as I was in Ontario visiting my first granddaughter).Get out and participate in the governance process, voice your opinion on how we develop this community and what kind of a future we leave for our kids..
